Atlanta Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement

Atlanta, GA has a very rich history, one of which being the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King together with students from black colleges and universities. Although this account has brought disorder in Atlanta during that time, political and business leaders were able to separate the city undertakings and developed it into one of the promising cities in United States.

Today, Atlanta, GA continues to attract investors with its commendable environment, considered as one of the greenest and cleanest cities in the United States, apart from having the highest number of high-tech facilities such as fiber optic cable than any other city. It is also home to corporate giants such as Delta Airlines, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, United Parcel Service and CNN among others.

The largest city in Georgia, Atlanta has a population of 486,411 in the city limits and more than 5 million in the metropolitan area (as of July 2006). More than 50 percent of the population is Black with the remaining composed of White, Asian, Native American, Hispanic and Pacific Islanders. Most of its residents profess the Protestant Christian faith but there are other religions practiced in the city such as the Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Baptist and Catholic. Moreover, Atlanta, GA has the third largest community of gay, lesbian and bisexual couples in the United States.

The music industry in Atlanta is a flourishing one being home to popular artists including Jermaine Dupri, Outkast, Goodie Mob and Lil John. The city is also the birthplace of LaFace Records and So So Def Records that produced artists such as Tony Braxton, Monica, Usher and Ciara. With the success of the early producers and artists in Atlanta, the city became renowned as the foremost place to enter the music industry.

Aside from being the center of music talents and producers, Atlanta, Georgia, is famous for its unique sites. The city is popular for its historic museums such as the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic site, Atlanta History Center and the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum. There are also art theaters and museums namely the Fox Theater, Fernbank Science center and the Woodruff Arts Center. It is also home to Georgia Aquarium (largest aquarium in the world), Underground Atlanta, World of Coca-Cola, Atlantic Station, The Varsity (largest drive-in restaurant in the world), and the Stone Mountain (world's largest exposed granite).
